About Gottfried Helnwein
Gottfried Helnwein (born 1948 in Vienna) is an Austrian-Irish artist and is regarded as one of Europe’s most significant contemporary artists. He is best known as a painter and photographer and gained international fame through his large-format, photorealistic works. In his art, Helnwein explores themes such as violence, suffering, childhood and social responsibility in depth. His often disturbing depictions address the darker sides of 20th-century history as well as human vulnerability.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was associated with the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, whose style was initially influenced by Surrealism as well as mythical and religious symbols. Today, Helnwein lives and works in Ireland and the USA and is regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation.
