About Jean-Gabriel Domergue
Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1889–1962) was a French painter, draughtsman and illustrator, best known for his elegant depictions of Parisian high society. His works combine the aesthetics of the Belle Époque with the clear, stylised expression of Art Deco.
As a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he developed a distinctive style characterised in particular by slender, graceful female figures. This characteristic style earned him the reputation as the ‘father of the French fashion woman’. Domergue’s works were exhibited internationally and influenced both fashion illustration and the figurative art of his time. To this day, his works epitomise elegance, sophistication and the unmistakable charm of the Parisian way of life in the early 20th century.
