About Jesús Reyes Ferreira
Jesús Reyes Ferreira (1880–1977), also known as Chucho Reyes, was a prominent Mexican painter, art collector and antiquarian. He is regarded as one of the most original artists of the 20th century in Mexico. Without any formal training, he developed a unique style and began his artistic career with colourful decorations on crepe paper, which was originally used as packaging material. His works are characterised by vibrant colours, expressive figures and a strong connection to Mexican folk art and colonial tradition. Reyes lived in Guadalajara and later in Mexico City, where he gained international recognition and exhibited in cities such as New York and London. His art influenced not only painters but also architects and contemporary artists, and to this day remains synonymous with a distinctive, emotional visual language.
