Bunkoya Oozeki – antique Japanese Bunko leather case depicting a daimyo procession, hand-painted, c. 1930–1940

This exceptional vintage leather case by Bunkoya Oozeki is thought to date from the 1930s to the 1940s and is a fine example of traditional Japanese leather craftsmanship. The case was painstakingly handcrafted, embossed and painted. Its finely textured surface depicts a historical daimyo procession, a traditional motif in Japanese Bunko leatherwork.

The depiction evokes the magnificent journeys of Japanese feudal lords during the Edo period. Such processions were an important part of social and political life in historical Japan. The richly detailed motif is one of Bunkoya Oozeki’s signature designs, combining traditional craftsmanship with Japanese cultural history.

The compact case is made from embossed and hand-painted Bunko leather in a light beige shade. The surface has an age-induced patina, which lends the piece its unmistakable vintage character. It was probably originally intended as a cigarette case. However, it is too small for modern cigarette sizes. Today, it is suitable, for example, for storing small mementos or as a decorative collector’s item.

Inside, beneath the flaps, there is a handwritten name and a date. These inscriptions lend the historic case an additional personal touch. The paper lining shows age-related discolouration.

The case is in remarkably good condition for its presumed age. There is no major visible damage. The exterior shows discolouration and patina. Furthermore, fine cracks are visible in the leather; it is not clear whether these are part of the original surface finish or have developed over time.

About Bunkoya Oozeki and the Japanese art of Bunko leatherwork

Bunkoya Oozeki is a Japanese manufacturer renowned for its intricately designed leather accessories and the traditional craftsmanship involved in working with Bunko leather (Bunkogawa) . This distinctive craft technique combines embossed leather with meticulous hand-painting and decorative surface treatments.

Bunko leather is characterised by its finely crafted relief patterns, which are often inspired by Japanese nature, art and history. The production process involves several stages of craftsmanship and gives each piece a unique surface texture.

The motif of the daimyo procession draws on an important tradition from Japan’s Edo period. The feudal lords were required to travel regularly between their domains and Edo, now known as Tokyo. These elaborately organised processions became an integral part of Japanese visual culture.

This leather case, believed to date from the 1930s , combines the traditional design of Bunkoya Oozeki with a patina that has developed over decades. It is an interesting collector’s item for lovers of Japanese craftsmanship, historical leather goods and exceptional vintage accessories.
