Burberry Nova Check – a British classic

The Burberry Nova Check is one of the British luxury house’s best-known designs and epitomises classic elegance with an unmistakable character. The distinctive checked pattern, featuring black, white and red lines on a beige background, evolved from the traditional Burberry Check, which has been used as the lining for the famous trench coats since the 1920s. Particularly in the 1990s and 2000s, the Nova Check pattern featured on numerous bags and accessories from the brand. Its clean, geometric design continues to make it a popular classic in British luxury fashion to this day.

Special notes

  • Historical origins: The famous Burberry check pattern was introduced in the 1920s as a lining for raincoats. From the 1960s onwards, it became a key distinguishing feature on accessories.
  • Meaning of Nova Check: Nova Check refers to a variation of the classic Burberry check pattern. It is characterised in particular by a light beige base colour and intersecting black, white and red lines.
  • Not a specific bag style: Nova Check is a pattern, not a specific range of bag styles. It can be found on shoulder bags, shopper bags, hobo bags, crossbody bags, travel items and accessories.
  • Nova Check vs. Haymarket Check: Both belong to the Burberry check family. Haymarket Check can often be recognised by the additional equestrian knight motif. The terms should not be equated without further examination.
  • Super Nova Check: This term is frequently used in the vintage market to refer to particularly large-scale versions of the check pattern.
  • Burberry Check: Today, the manufacturer primarily uses the umbrella term ‘Burberry Check’. Nova Check and Haymarket Check are particularly common on older items and in the preloved market.
  • Materials: The pattern is found on woven fabrics, canvas and coated materials. The exact composition varies depending on the model and year of manufacture.
  • Leather trims: Many Nova Check bags feature brown or black leather handles, shoulder straps and edging.
  • Hardware: Depending on the model, gold-coloured, silver-coloured or other metal fittings are used. Logo plaques, zips and buckles differ depending on the collection.
  • Vintage models: When inspecting second-hand Nova Check bags, particular attention should be paid to the fabric surface, coating, corners, leather trims, handles, zips and inner lining.
  • Coated canvas: On older bags, coated surfaces may show signs of wear, discolouration, cracks or peeling.
  • Authentication: The checked pattern, workmanship, material, internal labels and Hardware can provide important clues as to authenticity. However, a checked pattern that appears correct is not in itself a reliable proof of authenticity.
  • Model differences: Dimensions, materials, internal layout and features vary considerably depending on the bag model, year of manufacture and collection.
