The striking offset print ‘War’, dating from 1979, is by Bernhard Heisig, one of the most significant German artists of the 20th century and one of the leading figures of the Leipzig School. The work was published to mark the major Bernhard Heisig retrospective held in 1996 at the Mönchehaus Museum in Goslar and illustrates a central theme of his artistic practice: his intense engagement with war, history and human experience.
The signed offset print on heavy card impresses with its powerful visual language and the expressive style typical of Heisig. About Bernhard Heisig
Bernhard Heisig (1925–2011) was one of the most important German painters and graphic artists of the post-war period. As a leading figure of the Leipzig School, he had a lasting influence on figurative art in Germany. His artistic work is strongly shaped by historical events, particularly the experiences of the Second World War and their social consequences. Heisig combined personal memories with an expressive, often dramatic visual language. As the long-standing director of the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, he influenced numerous generations of artists and taught many prominent figures in the Leipzig art scene. His works are now held in numerous museums and major collections.
