About Bernhard Heisig
Bernhard Heisig (1925–2011) was one of the most significant German painters of the 20th century and a central figure in the so-called Leipzig School. He was the long-standing director of the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig and, as a teacher, shaped the careers of artists such as Arno Rink and Neo Rauch. His works are characterised by an expressive, often dramatic visual language in which personal experiences, history and social themes are interwoven. Heisig is regarded as a key representative of figurative painting in Germany and had a decisive influence on the development of art in the second half of the 20th century. His works are now held in numerous museums and major collections and enjoy high international acclaim.
