Special notes

  • Historical origins: The roots of the Alma date back to the 1930s. Its characteristic shape was influenced by Art Deco aesthetics. The name ‘Alma’ later became established for this well-known handbag model.
  • Naming: The name ‘Alma’ refers to the Pont de l’Alma, a bridge in Paris.
  • Distinctive design: Typical features include the domed silhouette, two rounded leather handles, a flat base and a wide, all-round double zip.
  • Sizes: The Alma was available in the sizes Nano, BB, PM, MM and GM. The size designations vary depending on the model and generation and should be checked against the actual dimensions.
  • Monogram Canvas: The classic version combines coated canvas with natural leather. Over time, this leather develops a distinctive patina due to exposure to light, moisture and wear and tear.
  • Damier Ebene: The darker leather trims are often less prone to visible water marks in everyday use than untreated natural leather.
  • Epi leather: The distinctive embossed pattern gives the Alma a understated look. Epi leather is available in a wide range of colours, particularly on older models.
  • Monogram Vernis: The glossy patent leather surface may develop discolouration, colour transfer or stickiness on older bags. These points should be checked particularly carefully when purchasing second-hand models.
  • Carrying options: The Alma has two fixed handles. Many smaller versions, particularly the BB and Nano, also feature a detachable shoulder strap.
  • Padlock: Numerous Alma models feature a small padlock with a key. When purchasing pre-owned bags, you should check that this accessory is present in full.
  • Base feet: Many newer Alma designs have metal feet to protect the base. These may be missing on older models.
  • Interior layout: The Alma usually has a large main compartment and, depending on size and year of manufacture, additional interior compartments.
  • Vintage models: When inspecting second-hand Alma bags, particular attention should be paid to the corners, base, leather handles, zip, lining, metal fittings and whether the bag retains its shape.
  • Authentication: Workmanship, materials, Hardware, embossing and reference numbers can provide clues as to authenticity. Older date codes and newer labelling systems differ. A single feature is not sufficient proof of authenticity.
  • Model differences: Dimensions, materials, interior features and accessories may vary depending on size, year of production and collection.
