Chanel Classic Double Flap – a French iKON

The Chanel Classic Double Flap is one of the best-known and most sought-after handbags from the French luxury fashion house. Its design traces back to the legendary Chanel 2.55, which Coco Chanel unveiled in 1955. In the 1980s, Karl Lagerfeld reinterpreted this classic, making the striking CC twist lock one of its most distinctive features. Distinctive features include the quilted leather surface, the elegant combination of a chain strap with woven leather, and the clean, timeless silhouette. The Double Flap owes its name to the additional inner flap, which protects the main compartment and characterises the unique construction of these bags.

Special notes

  • Historical origins: The Chanel Classic Flap became known in the 1980s under Karl Lagerfeld as a reinterpretation of the Chanel 2.55. The interlocking CC clasp became its distinctive trademark.
  • Double Flap vs. Single Flap: The Double Flap features an additional inner flap alongside the outer flap. This protects the bag’s contents and gives the bag extra structure.
  • Sizes: The classic Double Flap sizes are Small, Medium, Jumbo and Maxi. Dimensions and proportions may vary depending on the year of manufacture and collection.
  • Mini models: The Mini Square and Mini Rectangular usually have only one flap and are therefore not considered classic double-flap designs.
  • Characteristic fastening: The iconic CC twist lock is a typical feature. On classic models, the additional inner flap is often fastened with a press stud.
  • Interior layout: Characteristic features include several interior compartments, a zipped pocket beneath the outer flap and the well-known small pocket on the back, often referred to as the Mona Lisa pocket.
  • Chain strap: The leather-woven chain strap can be worn single or double on many models and allows for different carrying heights.
  • Leather types: Lambskin and grained calfskin (Caviar) are particularly common. Lambskin is especially soft, whilst Caviar leather is generally more durable.
  • Quilting: The classic diamond quilting is one of the most recognisable design features. In addition, selected models feature chevron quilting.
  • Hardware: Gold-coloured hardware (GHW) and silver-coloured hardware (SHW) are particularly common. The material and surface finish vary depending on the year of manufacture.
  • Dating: Older Chanel bags often have a serial number sticker. From 2021 onwards, this system was replaced on many handbags by a metal plaque with individual marking.
  • Vintage models: When inspecting second-hand double-flap bags, particular attention should be paid to the corners, leather surface, stitching, chain strap, fastening, inner flaps and lining.
  • Model differences: Dimensions, internal layout, leather types and features may vary depending on the year of manufacture, size and collection.
