Chanel Single Flap – timeless elegance

The Chanel Single Flap is one of the French luxury house’s classic bag designs, combining elegant lines with Chanel’s unmistakable style. A defining feature is the single flap, which gives the bag its clean silhouette and allows direct access to the interior. Particularly well-known are the models featuring the striking CC twist lock, the characteristic diamond quilting and the chain strap with woven leather. Many Single Flap bags originate from earlier Chanel collections and are now sought-after vintage classics.

Special notes

  • Single Flap vs. Double Flap: The Single Flap has only one outer flap. The Double Flap features an additional inner flap underneath, which covers the bag’s contents.
  • Historical background: The Chanel Classic Flap became known in the 1980s under Karl Lagerfeld as a reinterpretation of the Chanel 2.55. The single-flap construction is particularly common in certain vintage models and in mini versions.
  • Vintage Jumbo: Older Jumbo models were often made as Single Flap designs. Around 2010, the classic Jumbo largely switched to the Double Flap design.
  • Weight and storage space: As they do not feature the additional inner flap, single-flap models are often lighter than their double-flap counterparts of a similar size and offer easier access to the interior.
  • Characteristic fastening: Many classic models feature the iconic interlocking CC twist lock and a leather-wrapped chain strap.
  • Quilting: The diamond-shaped ‘Diamond Quilting’ is particularly characteristic. Depending on the collection, chevron quilting and other designs are also available.
  • Leather types: Soft lambskin and grained calfskin (Caviar) are particularly common. Lambskin has a particularly elegant look, whilst Caviar leather is generally more durable.
  • Hardware: Classic designs often feature gold-coloured or silver-coloured hardware. The material and surface finish may vary depending on the year of manufacture.
  • Dating: Older Chanel bags often have a serial number sticker. For newer models, this system was gradually replaced by other markings from 2021 onwards.
  • Vintage models: When inspecting second-hand Single Flap bags, particular attention should be paid to the corners, the leather surface, the stitching, the chain strap, the fastening and the lining.
  • Model differences: ‘Single Flap’ refers to a type of construction rather than a standardised model series. Dimensions, internal layout and features may vary significantly depending on the year of manufacture and collection.
